Named in 1990, the Cutthroat Trout has been the Idaho state fish for over 35 years. Leave it to Idaho to select a creature that appears to have a slit throat as the official state fish. Luckily, the name “cutthroat” only refers to the iconic red coloration on the underside of the trout’s lower jaw. As a native to Idaho’s cold water streams, rivers and lakes, the cutthroat trout is not necessarily dangerous to visitors. But, typical to Idaho naming conventions, it stands as a warning of the ever present dangers of Idaho wilderness.
